Us and Your Veterinarian
Referring your pet to a specialist indicates that your Primary Care Veterinarian cares about you and your pet and wants the skin disease treated in the safest, most up-to-date manner possible. ADVRC will provide the most advanced specialty care available for your pet. Your Primary Care Veterinarian is responsible for keeping informed on all aspects of veterinary medicine. There are hundreds of different skin diseases recognized in companion animals. Many of these diseases look alike with only subtle differences. Dermatologists are trained to recognize these differences and pursue the most direct and cost-effective diagnostic work-up and treatment. Just like health care for people, it has become more common for Primary Care Veterinarians to refer patients to specialists. This team approach has raised the standard of care that you are able to provide to your companion.
What is a Veterinary Dermatologist?
A veterinary dermatologist is a veterinarian who, after completing veterinary school, has received advanced training in dermatology and has completed an internship and a 2-3 year residency program in dermatology. In order to become board certified, the veterinarian must then successfully pass a rigorous examination covering all aspects of veterinary dermatology and allergy. Currently, there are approximately 145 veterinarians in the United States who are board-certified by the American College of Veterinary Dermatology. Board certification is the highest level of specialization available today in veterinary medicine.
